Agate Fossil Palm Tree Root Ball from Indonesia - 47 mm Polished Cube

This is a 47 mm polished cube cut from an agatized fossil rootball of the palm tree Palmozylon austinicus. This palm tree was alive about 15 million years ago. When it died, groundwater with a high silica concentration percolated the root ball and slowly replaced the roots and other material with agate. The intricate detail of the complex rootball structures is preserved in this specimen.

These rootballs were very large and can be found preserved intact.

Found near Lubuklinggau, Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia.
