This habit is often seen in crystals that lack z rhombohedral faces, which are typically smaller than r-faces and sometimes completely absent, as in amethyst from geodes in basalt. Needle quartz is another variety that frequently exhibits a trigonal habit. The term "trigonal" itself refers to the intrinsic symmetry of the quartz crystal structure, which belongs to the trigonal crystal system. This system allows for the formation of the six-sided prisms and pyramids that are so iconic to quartz crystals.
