Fire agate is a semi-precious natural gemstone that exhibits a stunning play of iridescent colors, similar to opal. It is formed by the deposition of silica, goethite, limonite, and iron oxide layers in the cracks and cavities of volcanic rocks, mainly in central and northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Fire agate has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale and a trigonal or monoclinic crystal system. It is a variety of chalcedony, which is a type of quartz. Fire agate is associated with courage, protection, strength, creativity and passion. It is often used in jewelry, meditation and energy healing practices.
