Hanksite is a rare evaporite mineral composed primarily of potassium, sodium, sulfate, and carbonate, typically forming in the highly alkaline brines of evaporite deposits. It is especially known from Searles Lake, California, where it occurs as well-formed crystals ranging from colorless to white, gray, or pale yellow. Hanksite crystals commonly display a distinctive hexagonal to pseudohexagonal habit with glassy to resinous luster, making them fascinating specimens.
