Description

Colorful fordite, aka Detroit agate, cabochon wrapped in sterling silver wire. This piece was from a firetruck line.

Fordite, also known as Detroit agate, is a fascinating example of industrial byproduct turned into art. Originating from the paint overspray in automobile factories, particularly noted in the Ford Motor Company, this material is composed of numerous layers of enamel paint that have hardened over time. The colorful stratification is reminiscent of natural agate stones, hence the name 'Detroit agate'. Initially, the colors of Fordite were muted and dark, but as car paint hues became brighter and more varied in the 1950s and 1960s, so did the Fordite, resulting in vibrant, eye-catching patterns. Today, Fordite is highly prized for its unique beauty and historical significance, often upcycled into jewelry and collectibles. However, due to changes in painting technology, such as the electrostatic painting process that reduces overspray, genuine Fordite is no longer produced, making existing pieces even more valuable.

I purchased this cabochon years ago and I recall that it was from a firetruck paint line but I do not know the details.

Size: 67 x 20 x 11 mm. 8 grams
